The weft: the mother of the tape.
The term 'mother' is much used as a synonym for cohesion, working in the background and indispensable. Without the coordinating mother, the family disintegrates into unstructuredness.
In board weaving, too, the weft thread has these properties:
Barely visible, Indispensable, Holding together, Pervading everything.
In the tape, the weft thread runs back and forth steadily at 90° to the course of the tape.
Always two warp threads above it and two warp threads below it.
By reversing at the side edge of the band, she binds the twisted warp threads together. warp threads together, as unseen as possible. That's why you like to use the same colours as the side warp threads. warp threads which form the edge or hem.
In my sample band I chose a deliberately different colour so that its course could be seen clearly.
After each weft, the thread is pressed firmly against the tape, Likewise, the sweep loops on the side edges are tightened well. If you do this evenly, the tape will have a constant width.
When the weaver starts inserting the weft thread from the right the weft bobbin, the shuttle, is always at the same hole position on the position of the board.
You can use this to check your work process.
At the beginning and at the end of the band (picture on the right) the weft thread is woven approx. three wefts forwards or backwards. At the end with the help of a needle or a wire loop. These are positioned in advance with the weft thread so that they do not have to be pierced.
Picture below: The weft thread is transported with a shuttle through the compartment formed by the small boards.
The thread wound up in this way can easily be unwound again when weaving.
